In the days immediately following the Abbotabad raid, Khaled Hathal al-Qahtani, 32, one of the men at the top of Riyadh’s wanted list and already listed among Interpol’s 13 most high-profile fugitives, turned himself in to counterterrorism units. At the end of March, in Abbotabad, where he was scheduled to meet Bin Laden, Umar Patek, the historic leader of the now-disbanded “Jemaah Islamiyah,” Al Qaeda’s assassination arm in Indonesia in the years immediately following September 11th, when he masterminded the Bali nightclub massacre, was arrested (though the news was only confirmed after the raid).
