Tokyo, newly elected center-left Prime Minister Hatoyama (Democratic Party) tearfully resigns. He leaves office following controversy over the continued existence of the U.S. military base in Okinawa. He is the fourth prime minister to resign in less than four years. He is replaced by former Finance Minister Naoto Kan.
