23-year-old Nigerian man, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, attempted to detonate an explosive device on the Amsterdam-Detroit flight. Only part of the explosive detonated, causing a small fire. The man was restrained by a passenger and the flight crew. The flight, with 278 passengers on board, arrived at its destination without further incident. Umar Farouk is a member of a Yemeni Al Qaeda cell.
