NASA crashes the Centaur stage of the rocket carrying the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LUROS) into the Cabeus crater at the Moon’s south pole. The Centaur stage remains in orbit, along with the LCROSS (Lunar CRater Observation and Sensing Satellite) probe, which takes valuable images of the plume of impact material before crashing into the crater. LCROSS confirms the presence of abundant solid water in the crater. Clues had already come from Clementine and Lunar Prospector.
