Global Financial Crisis. The US government is taking control of the finances of the country’s largest banks. All told, it’s a $1 trillion intervention. We have to go back to 1932 to find an event of similar magnitude, during the Great Depression, when the federal agency Reconstruction Finance acquired public stakes in more than 6,000 private banks.
