Malalai Kakar, who headed the Department of Crimes Against Women and was the country’s most famous policewoman, a symbol of President Hamid Karzai’s Afghanistan, was assassinated by the Taliban in front of her home in Kandahar. She had six children, one of whom was killed in the ambush.
