The European Parliament proclaims August 23, the date of the signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, the “European Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Crimes of Stalinism and Nazism.” MEPs request this in order to preserve the memory of the victims of mass deportations and exterminations and to foster greater peace and stability on the continent. They also note that the consequences of the Soviet regime and occupation are little known in Europe.
