Researchers from the National Science Museum of Japan and the Ogasawara Whale Watching Association took the first photographs of a live giant squid in its natural habitat, at a depth of 900 meters. They found it by following the path of sperm whales, their main predators. Giant squid can reach 13 meters in length. Subsequently, on December 4, 2006, the same team filmed a live giant squid for the first time. Many aspects of this animal’s life remain little known, however, given the enormous depth of their habitat (by comparison, a US Los Angeles-class nuclear submarine reaches “only” 450 meters).
