In late 1996, Apple announced its intention to bring cofounder Steve Jobs back into the fold, 11 years after he left the company, by acquiring his startup NeXT for $429 million. The following January, Jobs took the stage at Macworld Expo with then-Apple CEO Gil Amelio as the keynote speaker.
