Taiwan Strait. Third Taiwan Crisis. During a training exercise off Taiwan, the Chinese military launched three missiles, guided by the American GPS system. The first hit its target, but the second and third were lost, as the Americans, alerted to what was happening, quickly shut down GPS service in the area. This created a significant need for the Chinese military to develop its own satellite navigation system: Beidou (only three satellites and with very partial service), followed by Beidou-2, which became operational in December 2011 (covering only part of East Asia), and the satellite constellation completed in June 2020.
