With George H.W. Bush’s announcement of the termination of SAC’s ground alert, for the first time since 1957, there will no longer be strategic bombers parked alongside the runway with crews sleeping under tents, carrying thermonuclear weapons. The USSR will cease to exist at Christmas 1991. The following June, SAC will also cease to exist.
