Germany is reunified. On October 3, 1990, East and West Germany are reunified after 45 years of the Cold War. At the end of World War II, the country had been divided between the four main Allied powers: the Soviet Union, the United States, Great Britain, and France. In 1949, the United States, Great Britain, and France merged their occupation zones, forming the Federal Republic of Germany in West Germany, while the Soviets created the German Democratic Republic in East Germany. Over forty years later, nearly a million Germans gathered in the Reichstag in Berlin to celebrate the country’s reunification. At midnight on October 3, 1990, Germany is once again a united nation. The eastern state, which had essentially collapsed in 1989, was dissolved, and all its citizens became citizens of the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1993, a united Germany joined the European Union.
