Syria: President Assad (Alawite Shiite) orders a tank assault on the Sunni Syrian rebel city of Hama. Thousands will be killed (estimates range from 1,000 to 20,000) in addition to 1,000 soldiers killed. The city center will be razed and rebuilt.
