Microsoft secretly begins developing a new operating system, which will replace DOS, based on the desktop, windows, icons, a mouse, and a pointer. It hires Charles Simonyi from the PARC Xerox laboratory. This puts it on a collision course with Apple, which is working on the same concepts.
