In Iran, 51 American hostages were taken by Khomeini’s followers; they were released after 444 days; unlike the similar occupation of the US embassy which had taken place only 9 months earlier, this time Khomeini did not intervene against the students as in the meantime the hospitalization of the Shah of Persia in the US reawakened the Ayatollah’s anti-American feelings.
