The Los Angeles Times publishes revelations about a secret CIA project to recover a Soviet submarine. Journalists are on the trail of Project Azorian, through which the CIA had indeed already recovered part of the submarine the year before. But the article is inaccurate and vague. The CIA then methodically attempts to smuggle the news out, working with several national media outlets to do so. Until March 18th, when an independent journalist airs the entire story on the radio. Project Azorian aimed to return to the ocean floor to recover the submarine’s stern as well, but at this point it will be abandoned.
