In an attempt to bring some order to the classification of species, Cornell ecologist R.H. Whittaker proposed in the journal Science to divide life into five branches (kingdoms): Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protista, Monera; this classification was slowly accepted by the international scientific community, only to be replaced, starting in 1976, by Woese’s classification.
