Andy Grove goes to work for Intel. He will become the Director of Engineering, meaning the number 3 in the company. His original name is Andras Grof, and he grew up in the Jewish ghetto of Budapest. By the time he reached 20, he had experienced: the anti-Semitic fascist Hungarian dictatorship, the Nazi military occupation, the Nazi Final Solution, the siege of Budapest by the Red Army, a chaotic post-World War I democracy, a series of repressive communist regimes, and a bloodily suppressed popular uprising. He then moved to the United States at 21, graduated from the City College of New York, and earned a PhD in chemistry at Berkeley. He then went to Fairchild in 1963 and finally to Intel in 1968.
