Dave Wilkinson and Bruce Partridge use an ingenious electronic device invented by Robert Dicke to measure the possible temperature differences in the Universe from one direction to another. They demonstrate that, if such differences exist, they must be less than 0.1%. The background radiation is therefore highly isotropic, and there are no large clumps of matter in the Universe that distort its expansion.
