Nevada. Area 51. The SR-71 Blackbird spy plane, designed and manufactured by Lockheed’s Skunk Works group, is tested. A total of 32 will be built, and it will not be completely retired until 1999. Twelve will be lost in accidents, but none will be shot down over enemy skies. It flies at over Mach 3 and leaves a minimal radar signature.
