Joseph Carl Robnett Licklider publishes “Man-Computer Symbiosis.” “Lick” can be considered one of the fathers, or the father of, the Internet. Working for SAGE at Lincoln Laboratories (a military-funded institution affiliated with MIT), he developed concepts such as decentralized networks, time-sharing multitasking, and facilitated human-machine interfaces (HMIs), machines that work with and for humans, not instead of humans, to create a human-machine symbiosis.
