This CORONA spy satellite launch also encountered problems with the film, which didn’t fit properly into the chamber. After investigations and experiments by Kodak, it was discovered that the acetate film (3 mm thick) completely dries out in the extreme vacuum of space and becomes very brittle, practically crumbling. Kodak obtained a license from DuPont for a polyester-based film, and after a few weeks, the launch was underway again.
