China. Khrushchev’s official visit to China. On the second day of meetings, Mao receives his Soviet guest not in an official room, but in his swimming pool. Khrushchev cannot swim and is forced to wear armbands. The two statesmen hold the meeting while swimming, with interpreters following them poolside. It was Mao’s way of gaining an advantage, Khrushchev would later comment.
