The Americans, through Dwight Eisenhower, forced the French, British, and Israelis to withdraw from the military operation in the Suez Canal so as not to push the Egyptians into Soviet arms. But Egypt would still fall into the Soviet orbit, along with Syria. The Soviets, up until this point, also supplied weapons to Israel, along with the French.
