The first U-2 prototype is in flight. The secret project is called AQUATONE, and had been approved only eight months earlier. It would be the protagonist of hundreds of flights over the Soviet Union. But fierce Soviet opposition and the downing of one of these flights would lead to the program’s end, and an exclusive focus on spy satellites.
