Albert Einstein, a year before his death, in a letter to his dear friend Michele Besso, declared: “I certainly consider it possible that physics is not actually based on the concept of fields at all, that is, on continuous structures; in which case nothing would remain of my house of cards, but nothing would remain of the rest of modern physics either.”
