Eniwetok Atoll, Operation Ivy, “King” detonation, released from an aircraft at 450 meters, 500 ktons, the largest and most efficient fission bomb ever detonated; before King, it was believed that the problem of the critical mass of uranium would limit the yield of fission bombs to 250 ktons; there was great interest in this limit given the uncertain results of nuclear fusion research at the time.
