Moscow, Soviet Union. Alexandra Mikhailovna Kollontai (Александра Михайловна Коллонтай) dies. She was a Russian revolutionary of Marxist and feminist orientation, the first woman in history to hold the post of minister and to have featured, as a career official and ambassador, in the diplomacy of major European countries. Along with Maria Spiridonova, she was the only truly prominent female figure of the Russian Revolution. Kollontai nevertheless somehow managed to survive Stalin’s terror, a truly exceptional case among the Bolshevik leaders of 1917.
