Pat Haggerty, executive vice president of Texas Instruments, persuaded Bell to sell him a license to manufacture the transistor. He also hired Gordon Teal, a chemist who had worked at Bell on germanium, but who had recently focused on silicon. Within a few weeks, he was able to manufacture the first NPN transistor, as Shockley had envisioned, made of silicon.
