Enrico Fermi returns to Europe for the first time, more than a decade after leaving before the war. He travels to Basel for a conference on high-energy particle physics. He meets Heisenberg, Pauli, and Lise Meitner, and swims a couple of kilometers in the Rhine with his old friend Bruno Pontecorvo. He then travels to Rome.
