Witold Pilecki, a Polish soldier who had himself arrested and interned in the Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz during World War II for organizing an attempted armed revolt among the prisoners, was killed with a gunshot to the back of the head in a prison in Stalinist Poland on charges of treason.
