Bikini Atoll, Operation CrossRoads, underwater “Baker” detonation at 27m below the surface, 21Kton, projects 9 million liters of water (9000 tons) to a depth of 1600m; the 600m-wide column of water falls back, creating 29m waves that destroy part of the Ghost Fleet (71 ships) anchored for testing purposes nearby; 8 ships will sink; among the targeted ships are the Nagato (former Japanese flagship at Pearl Harbor) and the Saratoga (which withstands the 29m wave and sinks the following day due to damage sustained).
