With the Japanese surrender, a nascent Indonesian nationalist movement proclaimed independence. The Dutch intervened militarily, and four years of conflict followed, ultimately resulting in the country’s independence being recognized, even under American pressure on the Netherlands (the Marshall Plan was threatened), as the Americans were concerned about the spread of communism in Southeast Asia.
