B-29s of the 509th Composite Group (which would later bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki) flew 51 sorties over Japan with Pumpkin Bombs, or bombs the same size and weight as the Fat Man dropped on Nagasaki, filled with conventional explosives. The sorties were for training purposes in the use of such large and heavy bombs.
