Ciociaria, central Italy. The French commander of the Moroccan troops had given clear instructions: “…behind the enemy’s back are women, houses, some of the best wine in the world, and gold. All this will be yours if you win! (…) What I have told you and promised you, I will keep. For 50 hours you will be absolute masters: no one will punish you, no one will hold you accountable.” And the Moroccan soldiers in Esperia rape 3,500 women between the ages of 8 and 85, 800 men are sodomized, including a priest (Don Alberto Terilli) who dies shortly thereafter, and the victims’ relatives who rush to the scene are impaled. Then in Ceccano, Supino, and Spurgola there are 418 rapes, 29 murders, and 517 thefts.
