February 1944

Colossus goes into operation. It is the first electronic computer in history. The details will remain secret for decades. Tommy Flowers, its creator, died in 1998 without ever receiving due recognition for it, due to military secrecy until the early 21st century. Colossus weighs one ton and occupies a large room in Bletchley Park, north London. By the end of the war, ten Colossi will be in operation at Bletchley Park. Almost all will be dismantled at the end of hostilities. The last will cease to be used in 1960. The first photographs of Colossus are published in 1975. Many history books report that the first computer was ENIAC, when in reality ENIAC did not become operational until 1945.
