Niels Bohr is smuggled from Copenhagen aboard a speedboat to the Swedish coast. He reaches Stockholm, where the Nazis unsuccessfully plot to assassinate him. From there, British intelligence flies him to Scotland aboard a Mosquito, in the bomb cargo hold. There, Bohr is fitted with an oxygen mask, but over the roar of the engines, he doesn’t hear the pilot’s instructions to put it on. After the incredible vicissitudes—all well and good—of the fifty-eight-year-old physicist, he risks death by asphyxiation in the plane that carries him to safety.
