September 27 – 30, 1943

The Four Days of Naples. During the uprising, civilians, with the support of soldiers loyal to the Kingdom of the South, managed to liberate the city of Naples from Wehrmacht occupation. This event, which earned the city the Gold Medal of Military Valor, allowed the Allied forces to arrive on October 1, 1943, and find a city already free from German occupation, thanks to the courage and heroism of its inhabitants, now exasperated and exhausted by the long years of war. Naples was the first major European city to rise up, and successfully, against the German occupation.
