The Italian Social Republic is born. On this day, Mussolini moves from Monaco to Italy, to Rocca delle Caminate (in the province of Forlì); a few hours earlier, the list of ministers of the Italian Social Republic had been announced in a radio broadcast. Thus was born the Republic of Salò, as it would be called by the seat of government, the final incarnation of the fascist state, closely linked to Germany. Mussolini had been freed from his prison-hotel on the Gran Sasso on September 12th and transferred, after passing through Pratica di Mare and Vienna, to Monaco. After a meeting with Hitler in Berlin (on the 14th), the guidelines for the new state were decided, which the Duce would announce on September 18th in a speech broadcast on Radio Monaco. The first government meeting would take place on September 27th, while the name Italian Social Republic would not be officially adopted until November 25th: previously, the names Republican State of Italy, Republican Fascist State, and Republican National State had been used.
