Henning von Tresckow, along with his aide Fabian Schlabrendorff, placed a bomb on Hitler’s plane. The bomb was British-made and chemically detonated, placed inside a package of liquor bottles. He then asked Lieutenant Colonel Heinz Brandt, who was accompanying Hitler, to deliver it to his friend Colonel Helmuth Stieff at his headquarters in Rastemburg. The bomb was placed in the hold. The plane was supposed to explode over Minsk. But luck favored Hitler: the detonator failed due to the temperature inside the hold, which formed a film of ice. If the package had been placed in the cabin, Hitler would have died two years earlier. Henning von Tresckow committed suicide with a rifle grenade to the head after learning of the failure of the July 20th Plot.
