Forty people are present at the first ignition of a nuclear pile; to prevent an uncontrolled reaction, several safety measures have been taken: in addition to the cadmium rods, there are rods that are inserted by gravity by cutting a string, and volunteers stand on the pile with buckets filled with a solution of cadmium salts, ready to throw the contents into the pile in the event of an impending catastrophe.
