The Soviets launched a desperate counteroffensive in Stalingrad: more than a million soldiers were involved in the assault, along with 17,000 artillery pieces, 1,200 tanks, and 1,200 aircraft. This was Operation Uranus, which allowed the Russians to annihilate the Romanian support battalions and outflank Von Paulus’s Sixth Army, which thus remained besieged in Stalingrad.
