Bir Hacheim, Libya. The remains of two silted-up Roman cisterns form two small hills, called Les Mamelles by the French. The Germans attempt to take the site, but the heroic resistance of a Free France contingent composed of Jewish, Maori, and Foreign Legion volunteers prevents them. For five days, the Stukas carry out 1,030 dive-bombing missions with sirens blaring. But French General Koenig and his men finally manage to break through the German lines and rejoin the British troops. Two years later, Koenig will lead the French-occupied sector of Germany.
