The Me-163 Komet (also manufactured by Junkers, despite its name), a liquid-fueled rocket-powered fighter with a top speed of 960 km/h, was shelved after a first (successful) test in May 1941, after defense officials declared that traditional aviation would be more than sufficient to defend the skies of the Reich (this wasn’t exactly the case…). Approximately 300 examples were built in 1944. The Me-163 ejected its landing gear shortly after takeoff, then landed on a oleo-pneumatic skid.
