Much of the Italian fleet was destroyed by the British at Taranto. Twenty slow-moving biplane torpedo bombers, launched from the aircraft carrier Illustrious, disabled the battleships Duilio, Littorio, and Cavour, which were in Taranto harbor engaged in operations against Greece. The action reassured the depressed British.
