Only a handful of engineers worldwide were aware of the potential use of vacuum tubes as very fast switches to build a digital computer. One of these engineers was Tommy Flowers, who, in Cambridge, would go on to build the Colossus computer. Until the Second World War, vacuum tubes were used almost exclusively as signal amplifiers.
