Wallace Hume Carothers of Du Pont commercializes nylon. Its first use is in toothbrush bristles. Then, in 1939, it becomes women’s stockings. It’s “artificial silk.” Nylon stockings are a huge commercial success. By 1940, 64 million pairs of nylon stockings have been produced and sold.
