Guglielmo Marconi dies. His wife Cristina reports that, shortly before his death, he wrote to Mussolini, concerned about his overly intimate relationship with Hitler. He courageously warned Mussolini never to join Hitler in a war against England. Mussolini replied: “You speak like that because your mother was English.” Marconi commented to his wife: “Knowing Mussolini, I think he will be adamant. I am certain that entering the war against England will be a terrible tragedy for Italy and the House of Savoy.” During his funeral, all radio stations around the world interrupted broadcasts for two minutes, returning the airwaves to total silence, as it had been before Guglielmo Marconi’s invention.
