1937

Brothers John (a doctor of medicine) and Ernest (a physicist) Lawrence decide to treat their mother, who is suffering from uterine cancer, with X-rays in Ernest Lawrence’s laboratory. The tumor disappears. Their mother, then 67, lives to 83. Radiation therapy is born. A year later, Seaborg discovers cobalt-60, another source of radiation later widely used in medicine to treat tumors.
