The U.S. Army inaugurates a bombing range on the salty bottom of Muroc Dry Lake in California; it will become Edwards Air Force Base, named for Glen W. Edwards, who lost his life at Muroc in June 1948 while piloting a YB-49 Flying Wing, an experimental Nothrop jet.
